An enterprising modder has added AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR) technology to SteamVR (via Sweclockers). This gives supported VR games a much needed boost in frame rates while maintaining good image quality. Sounds like a good use of technology to me, and Nvidia's DLSS 2.1 has also added support for some VR headsets, meaning there's some parity between the two technologies.

AMD's FidelityFX Super Resolution is an open source project that works with a wide variety of graphics cards, not just AMD's own offerings. So while even FSR will struggle to get Intel's current integrated GPUs to shine in VR, Nvidia and Intel GPUs could also benefit.

It's not bad if you have a slightly more powerful GPU though, and we were impressed with the results in our testing. What gives FSR the real edge is its open-source nature and it has been quickly adopted even outside of professional developers. Modders have added FidelityFX Super Resolution to GTA V and now all VR games can take advantage of it with the effort of a single person.

The mod maker fholger in question acknowledges that there may be a few issues with the implementation of FSR at this stage in the render pipeline, especially when it comes to anti-aliasing. In other words, some experimentation may be needed.

Game developers will be in a better place to push this forward, but for older games this mod can mean the difference between stuttering and truly playable in VR. And hence the difference between casual gaming and puking everywhere.

Fholger shows off what the mod can do on its own github page, with side-by-side comparisons in Skyrim VR and Fallout 4 VR. They also explain how to adjust the mode to your own needs using the configuration files, including how to set the render resolution, the scale factor the FSR should use, and the amount of sharpness to add.

Any game that uses Open VR and runs on DirectX 11 should work with the mod, which basically requires you to copy a modified DLL file into your game directory. Also works with Unity and Unreal 4 games. This means that many games should benefit from the work of AMD FSR and fholger.
