Final Fantasy 14 icon changed after complaints from players with trypophobia

Sage is one of the new jobs coming to Final Fantasy 14 as part of the Endwalker expansion, a class of healer that fights with four floating blades called Noulith. Its icon represents these four weapons, and the MMO's designers probably didn't expect it to get as strong a response as it did.

"When we posted new details for the sage and reaper on the dedicated site, we also added their icons," wrote producer and director Naoki Yoshida in an update, "without thinking they were particularly big descriptions. However, we soon received feedback from the cast that the sage icon bothered them. anywhere in the world that says it hurts or scares him."

This is because of trypophobia, which is an unreasonable aversion to small, irregular clusters of holes. It is not a condition accepted by medical science as it must be stated in all articles on the Internet. But if you've ever seen pictures of lotus shells or Surinamese frogs (the young ones coming out of a honeycomb pockets embedded in their backs) and you've felt your skin crawling, you know the feeling. The theory is that it has to do with our built-in fears of insect infestations and rotting flesh, and photoshops transferring hole patterns to human skin make me wish I hadn't googled them. But then I think the holes in the pancakes make them look gross.

The redesigned icon retains the concept of four levitating blades, but no longer highlights the holes in them. "The design concept has not changed," wrote Yoshida, "the icon is based on the four nouliths that make up the sage's weapon. The holes in the original design were added for detail, but eventually they appeared as a cluster. The problem is that the new icon reduces the holes while emphasizing the design concept. Now, inevitably Comparisons will be made and some of you may prefer the original. But we believe designs like this are things that grow as you play, and ask for your understanding as you enter Endwalker."

Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker is scheduled to hit theaters on November 23.
